Unblocking Creativity

Been feeling stuck for several years, creative and career wise. I took pictures everyday, but everything was the same. Same breakfast, same places, same conversations, same way of perceiving things, same type of jobs… Slowly I got tired and frustrated. It didn’t feel right, there was a void that no word could describe.

As I went through a month of changing habits (eating clean, no social media, not reading news, etc.) and trying new things (watching old foreign films, painting, etc.), at the same time I was reading three books: The Artist’s WayIt’s Not Your Money, and Complex PTSD: From Surviving to Thriving. All three books were about healing, loving yourself and return to the true self. I read a lot, but I don’t go out of my way to look for books or ask for recommendations. They seem to always come to me at the right time.

Healing myself is an important part. So much that was blocked came from years of supressing feelings - the guilt, shame, anger, and sadness. The guilt could be I was too busy working and didn’t spend more time with my daughter or I probably felt shame the one time when I didn’t have money to buy a birthday gift for a good friend. Of course there were big things that I suppressed, but the everyday little things not being addressed became a big block too.

Things slowly shifted in the next two months. First time I noticed creative energy was flowing through was when James took the whole family to Whitewater Preserve. Normally, I’d say no to hiking, but during this time of change I learned to listen to my resistance. When we were there I was feeling the breeze, I felt joy watching the leaves tumbling along the wind, the sound of streaming water was so beautiful, the light peeking through the trees and hitting my eyes was heart-pounding. I was alive, as if I woke up, finally, from a long nap. I could hear God talking to me.

Since that day, I started listening to different types of music, making different kind of videos, painting more, and even tried making music with Garage Band! I have a Spotify account for the first time, listening and curating so many new music. If you already follow me on Instagram you might have noticed the new work I’ve been posting.

It’s so exciting where I am at right now. The healing work and going deeper into my true self continue though. It’s easy to fall back into sleepwalking. Everyday I must make conscious choices.

Things To Do To Unblock Creativity:

  1. Eat well and sleep well

  2. Meditate

  3. Reconnect with your inner child

  4. Appreciate your past

  5. Heal your inner self

  6. Open the mind and be exposed to new things

  7. Say yes to what you resist

  8. But also protect your energy

  9. Be an imperfectionist

  10. Play!
